LifeSize Communications Ltd has unveiled plans for a videoconferencing system that will let people hold high-definition video calls from their desktop or notebook PCs.
The LifeSize Desktop is a standalone desktop client that does not need a server, and allows high quality 720p/30 video in full 16:9 format, complete with high-definition audio.
It is claimed users can connect with colleagues around the world using an off-the-shelf webcam and receive high quality images. The interface makes initiating a video call as easy as picking up the phone, the company said, users just input their destination IP address and hit ‘dial’.
LifeSize Desktop supports off-the-shelf webcams for quick, simple deployments. Remote users can easily connect and receive high quality video at any bandwidth, over the corporate VPN or through LifeSize Transit, for secure NAT/Firewall traversal.
The package effectively extends videoconferencing out of the executive suite and enables organisations to hold high-definition (HD) video calls remotely.
Licenses will be sold in packages of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 seat licenses, when the software becomes available in Q3 2009.
The system is interoperable, enabling it to connect to any other SIP-based desktop or room video systems.
The LifeSize videoconferencing options now come in a range of models from the new desktop system to the top-end telepresence-like LifeSize Conference system, which is pitched against products sold by HP, Teliris and Cisco.
