Oracle has released VM Template Builder, an open source, graphical utility that makes it easy to use Oracle Enterprise Linux Just enough OS (JeOS)-based scripts for developing pre-packaged virtual machines for Oracle VM.

The new release gives end-users and ISVs the option to develop their Oracle VM Templates by using JeOS-based scripts directly or via the graphical Oracle VM Template Builder.

The company said that JeOS is a version of Oracle Enterprise Linux and has been tailored to facilitate the creation of Oracle VM Templates for production enterprise use, with reduced disk space requirements, reliability and protection against security vulnerabilities.

Oracle VM Templates are virtual machines containing pre-installed and pre-configured enterprise software that can be used by ISVs or end-users to develop, package and distribute their applications for faster deployment.

The company claimed that Oracle VM Templates speed and simplify application deployments and help reduce the risk of user errors in production, development, or test environments. Oracle is offering this combination of operating system and virtualization software for free download and free distribution.

Oracle VM reportedly supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications and offers customers scalable server virtualisation. Oracle VM Templates are available for Oracle’s Siebel CRM, Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle Fusion Middleware.

The company claimed that Oracle VM Template Builder uses ‘JeOS’ to facilitate building an operating system instance with only the absolute minimum packages needed for an Oracle VM Template, helping to reduce the disk footprint by up to 2GB or more per guest virtual machine and to improve security and reliability.

Wim Coekaerts, vice president of Linux and virtualisation engineering at Oracle, said: Oracle VM Template Builder extends the benefits of Oracle VM by enabling customers to more rapidly configure and deploy applications while reducing costs through the use of server virtualisation.

This is a testament to Oracle’s commitment to providing customers with tools that allow a fast, easy, and low-risk way to deploy enterprise software and solutions.

Oracle VM Template Builder is distributed as software packages via the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) and Oracle Technology Network.
