The thin client, network computer trend is right up former dumb terminal maker Wyse Technology Inc’s street, and the company is now ready with its battery operated, wireless Winterm Windows terminal. Wyse announced an agreement at the end of last year with Cruise Technologies Inc to work on the wireless terminals (CI No 3,042), and the Winterm 2930 is the product of the alliance. It integrates 2.4Ghz spread-spectrum frequency-hopping radio technology, and has a touch screen which can emulate either keyboard or mouse-style input. The company is aiming the product at mobile users, particularly in vertical markets such as health care, automotive and manufacturing. It says it is ideal for anyone needing to access corporate data, and it is secure since the data resides on a server and can only be accessed by an authorized user. The Winterm 2930 enables Windows applications which reside on a multi-user Windows NT server, to be displayed directly on its screen. The company says with the announcement of its first wireless Winterm, it has broadened its network computer and thin client intranet strategy, and reckons it now has a complete range of access devices for the ‘new wave’ of client- server computing. The Winterm 2930 is shipping now, and should sell for less than $3,000 the company says.
