Just as the UK outdoes the US in spades by licensing almost anyone that so desires to offer international phone service from the UK, transatlantic cable capacity is coming under pressure because of the Internet, MFS Communications Inc, one of those licensees, and the company planning to partner Cable & Wireless Plc on its second cable, warns: the UK government is confident that the new free-for-all will spur investment in new cables – and if there are problems comparable with satellite clutter underthe ocean, we haven’t heard of them (and don’t much want to, thank you, Greenpeace), and British Telecommunications Plc reckons there are already enough cables to meet all the forecast demand until 2003.
