At its Innovate 97 Conference, held in its home town of Houston, Texas this week, Compaq Computer Corp introduced a new laptop, the Armada 1500. The machine, priced from $2,000, is Compaq’s first to fully integrate an AC adapter, hard drive, diskette drive, ten-speed CD-ROM, extra battery options, 33.6Kbps modem and choice of Windows 95 or Windows NT operating system. It is intended for business customers looking for good value. There are three models using 130 or 133MHz Pentium chips. Over the next three months, Compaq will introduce further high-end models in the Armada range. Compaq says it intends to regain the number one slot in the laptop market it has lost to Toshiba Corp.
