JavaOne, the Java developer’s conference held last week in San Francisco, this year featured a Java in the Real World track, and it is with that in mind that Sun Microsystems Inc announced two more Java specifications that are meant to pour Java over every electronic device possible, not just computers. PersonalJava is for set-top boxes, game consoles, hand-held computers, telephones and Internet-enabled televisions. EmbeddedJava is for the high- volume, low-cost microprocessor market, the kind of chips found in cellular telephones, pagers, routers and switches and the like. And aiming more toward the high-end than ever before, the JavaSoft unit announced the JavaPlatform for the Enterprise, which includes Enterprise JavaBeans components that JavaSoft claims can be used to build manufacturing, financial, inventory management, and a host of other enterprise applications. Sun says that it will work with unnamed partners on the EnterpriseBeans specification, which is due to be released in the summer, around the same time as EmbeddedJava and PersonalJava.
