A sad postscript to the end of Phil White’s tenure as chief executive officer of Informix Software Inc: looks like the Highway 101 billboard wars will end. Now that Bob Finocchio has taken over as CEO, with White taking the back seat as chairman, White’s often amusing habit of poking fun at his neighbor on the main route into Silicon Valley, Oracle Corp, by cheeky ads on a strategically placed billboard right by Oracle Death Star at Redwood City (such as You Have Just Passed The Slowest Database On The Highway, or Dinosaur Crossing) may no longer be used as an Informix marketing campaign. Think Larry [Ellison] and I have jabbed each other enough these past few years, is all White is saying, deferring the ultimate decision to his successor.
