V Communications Inc, San Jose, California, is offering version 3.0 of its $100 System Commander program which enables PC users to install and use any combination of up to 100 operating systems, including Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, DOS, OS/2, SCO Unix, Solaris or Linux, in fact any Intel-based operating system. The company says it can be useful when upgrading from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, since users can maintain both until they are ready for a complete transition. It says gamers can run favorite DOS games in their native environment, and then turn to Windows 95 to access other 3D games. Users can dabble in Unix without investing in a separate system. The software also allows users to run several different language versions of a single operating system. System Commander takes control of the PC before a new operating system is run, protecting the original operating system from the predatory nature of a new operating system, which will invariably try to find and destroy existing operating system files. Once multiple operating systems are installed, users get a menu of operating startup choices. System Commander doesn’t require repartitioning for installation as it installs itself into the existing DOS or Windows 95 partition. In includes a boot-time editor that enabling administrators to you to change config.sys, autoexec.bat or any Windows .ini files before selecting an operating system. It offers multiple screen savers. Version 3.0 includes new password security enabling multiple users to use a single PC and be given access to only certain operating systems. The program works with systems that have up to 14 separate hard drives uses less than 1Mb of disk and no RAM.
