Computer Associates International Inc has a naturally dim view of the reported plan to put Tivoli Systems Inc’s TME-10 systems management framework together with Sun Microsystems Inc’s SunNet Manager network management schema and JMAPI Java-based management interfaces into a product code-named Corona (CI No 3,127). CA insiders say its CA-Unicenter technologies already provide the integrated network and system management services Tivoli and Sun are proposing. Tivoli needs a quick fix – at least on a marketing level. Ironically, it is SunNet Manager users who already enjoy integration with Unicenter. Tivoli and IBM networking boss Frank Moss has one too many Coronas or IBM SAA Version 2 when he’s quoted as saying this time we mean it, said one analyst. Delivering a joint framework called Corona basically amounts to delivering Systems Application Architecture Version 2 with a second company. Moreover, one commentator asks has integrating NetView with TME proven so time consuming and awkward that SunNet manager is now required to bail out a lame duck NetView? The same source observes that Tivoli has already postponed development of a lightweight management framework for small systems as the current TME Tivoli Management Environment is too cumbersome to run on Windows. So a fix is necessary. Is Frank Moss, in desperation, turning to Sun to address this?
