Compaq Computer Corp is today releasing new additions to its desktop computer range.
It has announced the Deskpro 2000 and 4000 with 166 to 233Mhz Intel Corp Pentium processors with MMX technology, and hinted at a Pentium II upgrade around September. The company is placing emphasis on reduced cost of ownership, while at the same time is singing about the machine’s high performance capabilities. Aimed at the corporate market, the machine’s feature network computer capabilities, while maintaining personal computer functionality. The machines now feature remote ROM flash memory to enable system managers to upgrade personal computer system ROMs across the network. The 4000 series uses an electronic locking mechanism that enables the cover lock of the computer to be controlled remotely and works alongside the Compaq Smart Cover Sensor which alerts the systems manager or user when the lid is removed. Memory change alert functions tip off the manager in the same way. The introduction of the new additions is an international launch coinciding with the publication of the company’s financial results with products being available in the US today and Europe on Monday. Although the announcements are basically the same, the US will see the introduction of more products than in the UK and Europe. Pricing hasn’t yet been finalized.
