Having failed to acquire a personal computer distributor like Gateway 2000 Inc, or a mail order unit from Micron Technology Inc (CI No 3,137) Compaq Computer Corp has decided to do the next best thing. It has just hired 2,000 sales people, in order to increase its contact with customers, which chief executive Eckhardt Pfeiffer feels the company needs to if it is to go against the likes of Gateway 2000, and direct sales pioneer Dell Computer Corp.
