IBM Corp’s Serial Storage Architecture has singularly failed to sweep all before it in the battle to set the standard for next generation high-speed disk access, but the company is plowing on with the technology and has refined the standard to double the rate at which data is transferred between the storage device and the processor. IBM says it has developed a prototype SSA 160 chip that takes Serial Storage Architecture to 160M-bytes per second throughput, and expects to ship SSA 160 products next year, as well as making the technology available to third parties that want to design their own products to the new standard.
