In yet another win for its telecommunications systems business, Sema Group was retained by AT&T Co’s Wireless division in mid- December to develop a new range of value-added services and two- way messaging for its new personal communications service recently launched in the US. Under the $6m contract, Sema Group will develop and integrate a high-performance messaging system based on Tandem Unix equipment, using its own SMS 2000 application. The first module of the new services, Over the Air Activation Teleservice, has already been delivered, permitting customers to activate their AT&T Wireless service from their newly purchased portable phone, even when there is no salesperson present at the store. Other services, including two-way messaging and Internet access, will be delivered during the course of 1997. Sema Group was also retained by Radio France to design, develop and implement a system for cataloging its radio broadcasts. The Edison project is due to be operational shortly.
