LSI has introduced Axxia Communication Processor family designed for wireless infrastructure applications, including video streaming, web browsing and high-quality digital voice.

The company claims that the new processors feature LSI Virtual Pipeline message-passing technology and are capable of managing wireless traffic with low latency and no load on the CPU complex.

According to LSI, the first member of the Axxia Communication Processor family, the ACP3448 processor, features four PowerPC 476FP processor cores with a 512KB L2 cache per core, 4MB of system cache, integrated DDRIII memory controllers, and an array of intelligent offload engines, including packet classification, traffic management, security processing and deep packet inspection.

The on-chip processing elements are tied together using the new LSI Virtual Pipeline technology. The technology uses deterministic modeling and distributed queue management to optimise inter-processor message routing and gives network operators the tools to manage traffic congestion in real time, the company said.

In addition, the application development kit (ADK) modules, application programming interfaces (API) and software modules are provided to enable users to develop software for wireless applications.

Gene Scuteri, vice president of networking components division at LSI, said: “The Axxia Communication Processor family will allow wireless service providers to handle much higher loads at lower cost, and to generate more revenue with greater customer satisfaction.

“Because of the innovative approach we’ve taken, Tier-1 mobile network equipment manufacturers are now developing systems based on the Axxia family that can cope with the immense demand being placed on wireless networks.
