Philadelphia-based disaster recovery specialist Sungard Data Systems Inc is offering UK Tandem Computers Inc users a back-up service as part of its plans to expand into Europe. Sungard Recovery Services (UK) Ltd is a joint venture with car information supplier and large Tandem user HP Information Plc, and is headquartered in HP’s data processing centre Victoria, London. The directors claim it is the UK’s first disaster recovery service based on Tandem fault-tolerant computers and is aimed primarily at the financial marketplace. The company hopes to announce its first contract early in the new year and expects to close between six and 14 contracts by the end of the first year. Sungard will offer an IBM service, probably next year, and says it may also do DEC and Stratus Computer.
