There will be a plethora of knee-jerk price cuts on Personalikes following the IBM announcement, but one or two companies got in ahead of IBM, notably Hewlett-Packard, which has cut US prices on its Vectra AT-alike up to 15%. The Vectra Model 50 with 640Kb processor and 20Mb hard disk is reduced 14.9% to $3,995, and the Model 60, which has a 40Mb Winchester is cut 12.7% to $4,795. The company also reduced prices on preconfigured applications-specific Vectras, on its add-on disk drives and on the Enhanced Graphics Adaptor by up to 29%. Hewlett-Packard attributed the cuts to lower manufacturing costs and streamlined production, which is rather like saying that the sun rose this morning only because we all went outside and prayed to it.
