IBM chose the ABC television War & Remembrance megamini-series on Wednesday night to announce to the world the first effort to run 12 3090 processors as a single complex to create its most powerful pass yet at a scientific supercomputer. The company is working with Cornell University on the project, which is understood to involve the linking together of two 3090/600s, each fitted with the full complement of six Vector Facilities, to create a machine that on IBM’s figures might have a peak rating of 1.4GFLOPS. More realistically, on double-precision Linpack all-Fortran benchmarks done at the Argonne National Laboratory, it would have an indicated performance of up to 168 MFLOPS, against 149 MFLOPS for a Cray X-MP/4 and 195 MFLOPS for a Y-MP/8, run ning the same benchmarks.
