It took only days for the gainsayers to come round to our way of thinking and agree that the IBM 3090 F models (called something else) would come out this month, as we suggested in CI No 966: if the consensus is right, we got the date five days out and it will be next Tuesday, July 26, not 21; the new models – offering perhaps up to 25% better throughput at a 5% increase in price are expected to be available as field upgrades from the existing so users won’t have to go to the next model in the line in order to get the performance gain; the rushed launch is seen as reflecting dull US market conditions.
