Rounding up the figures for the computer businesses of the top seven companies in Japan for fiscal 1988, Fujitsu Ltd comes top with revenue up 14.5% at $9,823m, and exports up 23.4% at $1,715m; NEC is next with business up 12.5% at $8,645m and exports up 34.5% at $1,560m; IBM Japan was third with sales up 20.7% at $8,450m and exports surging 34.7% at $2,527m; Hitachi Ltd is in fourth place and in local currency looks likely to top the one trillion yen this year, doing Y?804,000m or $6,406m last year, up 14.5%, exports accounting for $1,155m, up only 3.3% – no wonder it is looking for further outlets for its mainframes beyond National Advanced Systems and Comparex, with a small contribution from Olivetti, which hands some machines on to Nixdorf; next was Toshiba Corp, growing computer business 12% to $3,043m, and exports 9% to $677m; Unisys Corp came next with revenues 9.8% ahead at $1,925m, and Mitsubishi Electric pulls up the rear with computer revenues of $1,332m, exports up 29% at $319m.
