Control Data Corp has a tough time selling its mainframes in the West these days but in the Comecon countries it looks to be pushing at an open door. The company has announced a $9m letter of intent from Poland for an energy management system, which would be financed by the World Bank if converted into an order. The company also says that it has orders for five small mainframes from East German universities. And following President Gorbachev’s visit to its Minneapolis headquarters, Control Data is hoping to negotiate a joint venture to build workstations in the Soviet Union following pilot projects in nuclear reactor safety, petroleum exploration, electrical energy management and software development.
