TEXAS INSTRUMENTS PLUNGES INTO THE PERSONALIKE CHIP SET BUSINESS

By CBR Staff Writer

Texas Instruments Japan has plunged into the Personalike chip set business, starting to take orders for a three-chip set that implements the main support circuitry of the IBM AT: the three chips are an address unit, a direct memory access controller and a VLSI peripheral circuit; 14 other parts, including the 80286, an 8042, a 256K memory chip and a ROM are needed to build an AT; the chips support a 16MHz 80286 and from 512Kb to 4Mb memory and sell for $114 for 10,000 or more; a 20MHz version of the chip set, and a similar set for cloning the PS/2 are planned.
