British Telecommunications Plc has signed a multi-million pound agreement with Novell Inc to act as a reseller of its full range of local area network equipment in the UK, Novell announced at Which Computer? in Birmingham yesterday. Telecom will call it T-Net 1000 and Novell looks for the agreement to increase sales dramatically. Novell also launched its IBM-compatible diskless workstation, and says it is available now in the UK at UKP895 including Ethernet high speed interface plus monitor and keyboard. Novell also unveiled a portable solid state memory device with a two-week battery back-up plus error correction coding called Bat-ram at UKP1,900. Novell claims the system is 50 times faster than a hart disK sub-system, offers 80Mb of storage and is designed to eliminate the cpu to disc throughput bottleneck. System Fault Tolerance Level II, an on-line disk mirroring and duplexing device to update two drives concurrently for security, costing about UKP3,600, completed the announcement.
