IBM says its engineers and scientists are working on a prototype colour flat panel computer display that is larger and clearer than any demonstrated so far. Using thin-film transistor technology, the 720 by 550 pixel 14 diagonal, has greater resolution than most current colour cathode ray displays and is said to be readable even in strong light. The screen results from a two-year joint programme between IBM Yamato Laboratory in Japan, Toshiba Corp and the IBM Research Division. IBM is now working to give the thing a full range of colours – it currently displays up to 16 – and to reduce the cost of manufacturing it.
