Apple Computer Inc’s version of Unix, A/UX, had its first showing in a commercial environment at the Mac User Exhibition in London last week. Although A/UX has been in use in research and development departments and at academic institutions in the UK for some months, Informix’s Wingz spreadsheet represents the first commercial application of the operating system to become available in this country. First customers are to receive Wingz in six weeks’ time from Frontline Distribution of Basingstoke, Hampshire, which has been appointed the sole distributor for the UK. A/UX is an implementation of AT&T’s Unix System 5.2 Version 2, and as Apple says that it intends migrate it up to all AT&T’s higher releases – with V.4 the immediate target – the Cupertino company can be regarded as being firmly in the Archer Group camp in the bitter battle over standards for future releases of Unix.
