Costa Mesa, California-based Emulex Corp has added a family of tape subsystems for back-up storage of data for DEC VAXclusters: both incorporate Emulex’s ST01 Small Computer System Interface data channel adaptor for use in DEC’s central storage controller unit for clustered computers. The SS3X is compatible with the IBM-developed 3480 tape standard and is a subsystem that transfers data between the tape unit and ST01 data channel adaptor at 3Mb to 4Mb per second and has capacity of 200Mb to 300Mb per cartridge, with optional stacker units for up to 3Gb of unattended back-up in one magazine; it’s shipping this month and costs $69,225. The SX4X is a 4mm digital audio tape subsystem using helical scan. Each drive can store up to 2Gb of data and up to four drives can be installed in a single rack-mount chassis. It has read-after-write and file mark search capabilities and can be used for on-line storage and retrieval as well as for back-up; it costs $13,019.
