British Telecommunications Plc has won a facilities management contract to implement and run a UKP70m system for HM Customs & Excise. British Telecom will use a system called Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight, Chief, to process records of all UK imports and exports, through both airports and seaports, during the 1990s: Chief will be accessed by importers, exporters and freight forwarders. British Telecom will develop the system using hardware from ICL Ltd; work on the contract starts immediately, with the first new facilities scheduled to start in May 1990. British Telecom has also been running the Departmental Entry Processing System for Customs & Excise since the early 1980s.
