Hitachi and Toshiba have both announced plans to stress assembly of 1M-bit memory chips over 256Ks in the US: Hitachi says it will begin assembly of one megabit dynamics at its plant in Irving, Texas next summer where it is now assembling 256Ks at a rate of 600,000 a month; it is currently doing about 300,000 1M parts a month at three plants in Japan and now intends to ramp up monthly production to 1m, although it is not yet clear how many the Texas plant will be producing; it also hints it may open a line in Malaysia; Toshiba will start assembling 1M-bit parts in Sunnyvale this year, and is planning to raise its worldwide output of the 1M parts to 3m a month by next autumn from the present 500,000 a month.
