State College, Pennsylvania disk subsystem integrator Trimarchi Inc – it offers products for the DEC and Sun Microsystems markets – has introduced dhe first erasable optical drive for DEC Q-bus, Unibus and MicroVAX 2000 machines. The Las-Er-Ase subsystems come with 600Mb 5.25 drives procured from Ricoh Co, and have an access time of 61mS – about floppy disk speed, and peak data transfer rate of 1.2Mbits-per-second. Available now, the subsystems use the standard DEC MSCP protocol and are available in internal, external and mixed configurations, at $5,295 with controller. Trimarchi is also evaluating Maxtor Corp and Sony Corp erasable drives.
