IBM had some rather big problems with the information system it uses to disseminate news to its customers on Tuesday: seems the system was taken down over the weekend, and when it was brought up again and the first batch of Tuesday announcements was put up, the system crashed and the whole lot was lost – that sort of thing can happen to the best of us – and as soon the news got out that there were major announcements – because IBM sent out the press release on Monday night, the story was in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday morning, so everyone with a user identity number wanted to get the details at the same time, and when they couldn’t get in, kept dialling again every five minutes, running into 500 other people doing exactly the same thing, thus compounding the problems further; the upshot is that customer letters on the 3090-380S and new 9370s – plus the stuff that came with them – still hadn’t been posted by the close of play.
