Meeting demand for long-distance phone service that is growing at 10% a year, with the biggest growth in data communications, AT&T Co plans to raise substantially its investment in converting analogue facilities to digital this year: it will spend $2,500m of its $3,900m capital budget on upgrading its network this year, against $2,000m out of $3,500m in 1986, and in particular will replace 300 analogue exchanges with 103 digital ones.
