Cipher Data Products announced that it has won the contest to supply IBM with a streaming tape drive for the Personal System/2. The San Diego company will be supplying IBM with 55Mb quarter inch streamers to be marketed as the IBM 6157 from September this year. The drive will be a free-standing external unit supplied with IBM’s own plug-in controller board. No financial details of the pact were disclosed.
