Control Data Corp has now turned decisively bearish on its computer group, which covers both the Cyber mainframes and the Eta Systems supercomputers: it says that following the one week of unpaid leave this month at five plants, it will decide by the end of the month on the need for spending freezes, lay-offs or even plant closures in the division – it is not certain that cuts will be needed, but there are no sacred cows the company, told Reuters; sales at the computer systems and services unit looks like coming in 10% to 15% below plan, and while the company would give no indication of the planned figure, it said that the unit did about $325m a quarter last year – that’s $1,300m.
