IBM Corp and the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, New York have embarked on a joint research project to study new ways to use computer technology in the hotel and restaurant management industry, and in the education of students planning to enter what the Americans quaintly call the hospitality industry: the three-year research partnership, sponsored by IBM’s University and College Systems organisation, will focus on developing new teaching technologies and operational applications, as well as on strategic planning and research, and IBM’s contribution to the project consists of $1m in PS/2 hardware and software – 58 PS/2 Models 50, 70 and 80 computers at a variety of locations throughout the School of Hotel Administration and in the on-campus Statler Hotel and J Willard Marriott Executive Education Center, with many of the PS/2s linked using Token-Ring local nets and IBM mid-range CPUs.
