Hewlett-Packard Co is extending its graphics accelerator technology down to its low-end Unix workstations, beginning with the launch this week of an 3D SRX version of its HP 9000 Model 319. With a standard list price of UKP20,000, the 68020-based systems, Hewlett claims, halve the entry price to the SRX technology, which is also available on the 9000 Model 350 and 68030-based 360 workstations, and top-end 825 and 835 RISC workstations. Included is a 16 colour monitor, eight planes of frame buffer memory, 4Mb RAM, 16-bit Z buffer, keyboard and software licences to use HP-UX, Network File System and NS/ARPA. Performance is rated at 70,000 3D vectors per second. Product Manager David Lyon said that the 2D CRX accelerator and Turbo-SRX ray-tracing extensions would be offered on the Model 319 within a few months.
