Optical Data Inc, developing erasable optical disk media up in Beaverton, Oregon, is diversifying with the acquisition of Adivan Technology Inc, Fremont, California which has developed a prorietary coating for making high-density – which in Optical’s terms means 1.2Mb – floppy disks for use with AT-alikes. Optical plans to accelerate production of Adivan’s current line of 5.25 and 3.5 disks, and develop the coating further to make higher density disks. Optical will go after independent software duplicators, software publishers, OEM disk buyers, and large volume end users involved with internal publishing and distribution. Optical has 19 employees and has been developing erasable optical media since 1984, hence the name. Adivan adds 38 employees with the floppy disk technology. Terms were not disclosed.
