Plessey Co has at last won through in the People’s Republic of China with an order worth over UKP6m to supply 26 System X local exchanges and remote concentrators to the China Railways. The order, Plessey’s first for System X in the Far East, will give the Railways with 24,000 lines for delivery by 1989. Plessey is keen to emphasise that the contract was won on the grounds that System X, in competition with seven other suppliers, was the only exchange to meet China Railways’ technical requirements. Plessey is also still awaiting approval from the Chinese authorities for its ISDX PABX to be used as part of the Chinese telecommunications network.
