Appearing to lend the lie to the gossip in leasing circles that IBM has run into trouble on the chips for the top-end 3090 architecture ES/9000s – the Models 620 and 720, the company yesterday announced a special offer in the US under which 3090-300J customers can upgrade to the six-processor ES/9000-720 and take advantage of a deferred payment option under which 60% of the purchase price will be due on the date of installation, the balance 18 months later. Users of machines upgradable to the 300J can make that upgrade and still qualify: the 3090-300J to ES/9000-720 upgrade must be ordered on or before March 31, 1991, and installed on or after January 1 1991, but no later than December 31 1991.
