IBM Corp’s Lotus Development shipped 1.7 million units of Lotus Notes in the first calendar quarter and is on target for the company’s estimates, according to Lotus president Jeff Papows. He told Reuters the company will ship 8 million units this year. But the target appears to have moved slightly. Back at Lotusphere at the end of January, Lotus was predicting 9 million shipments this year. But Papows said sales are usually greater in the second half of the year. He also said about 75,000 Domino server packages were shipped in the quarter and the company expects the yearly total to be about 400,000. And in response to the numerous complaints about Lotus level of customer service and support, Papows said most of the 2,500 people that have been added to the Lotus payroll since 1996 have been in the areas of support and consulting. The headcount is now around 8,500.
