Show us your numbers Ed! says Hewlett-Packard Co of Sun Microsystems Inc president Ed Zander’s claim that it will overhaul HP’s leading Unix server market share in unit and dollar terms by the end of the year (CI No 3,206). HP says Sun’s forecast is just wishful thinking, in fact it believes Sun’s booming business has peaked. HP says that now Intel Corp has given it the green light to start talking about its system plans for the IA-64 Merced chip by year-end – including those transition units which will support PA-RISC and Merced – Sun’s going to find it very uncomfortable. In addition to new high- end kit in the September/October timeframe that’ll deliver more of the high-end Convex-based V Class server technologies, HP says it will also trounce Sun’s number one TPC-C performance numbers. It claims to have shipped over 5,000 T-Class servers; how many StarFires has Sun shipped. It got 70 away in the last quarter and expects to deliver around 100 this quarter. In its opinion, Sun’s plan to address ccNUMA technology in a year or two puts it behind the technology curve (CI No 3,206).
