MCI Communications Corp is cutting 1,200 jobs from its 52,000- strong payroll in what it calls a minor realignment of its Business Markets Division, which accounts for over half its $15bn annual revenue. The company says it makes periodic adjustments in its workforce, and made a similar unannounced cutback last quarter. It says it prefers to cut little and often that to make massive lay-offs and restructurings such as another company’s 40,000 lay-offs, it said, referring to AT&T Corp’s cuts although changes in the market meant that while an army marched out of one door at AT&T, another marched in the other door, so that the company ended 1996 with the same number of jobs as it had the previous year – simply different ones.
