Software AG has refresh the beta versions of its implementation of Microsoft Corp Distributed COM on non-Redmond platforms, specifically Solaris, Digital Unix, Linux and AIX. It says that it should be able to start licensing the technology in April provided it hasn’t introduced any significant new bugs. The first beta on MVS is now due out in the second or third week in March and the company is hoping to be able to deliver something for the AS/400 – from which it’s expecting great things – by late summer. When the Software AG-Microsoft relationship that underlies these developments was first announced back in October of 1995 what Software AG was supposed to port was spoken of as OLE, then it went to DCOM and now Software AG says it thinks it’s supposed to call it Active Server. As we understand it, it is ostensibly the same stuff Microsoft has given over to the Open Group and its so-called Active Group.
