Novell Inc, obviously needing all the money it can get following some pretty bad figures this year (CI No 3,171), has won more than $1.3m in software piracy litigation settlements. The company set up an anti-piracy group, which it says gave it the leads that led to the prosecution of five of its resellers and two individuals, for apparently selling upgraded versions of the company’s NetWare and IntranetWare, as new products. Most of the settlements with Jaco Electronics, Micro Supply, Accord Systems, Digidrive and RTI. According to the US Business Software Alliance, some $11bn is lost each year through software piracy.
