Terminals manufacturer Wyse Technology Inc has said it is shipping, what it claims is the industry’s first ICA-based Windows thin-client devices with Token-Ring communication. The San Jose, California-based company’s Winterm 2000 Series SE of products communicate with a server via the Intelligent Console Architecture ICA 3 protocol developed by Citrix Systems Inc. And the company has also just announced that it will be launching a wireless version of Winterm, which stands for Windows terminal, next week, claiming it will provide users with a secure alternative to laptop computers, all data being held on the server. The products have been given greater communication capabilities with support for 10baseT Ethernet connections, while an option slot for personal computer cards gives additional security. The entire 2000 SE range has a Windows interface and applications are displayed directly on the desktop. Wyse insists that its approach offers the cheapest method for bringing Windows applications to the desktop (CI No 2,803). The Winterm product line is selling best in the business sector, with government and education markets also showing an interest. Since its last launch in 1995, Wyse has shipped some 50,000 Winterm products. Token- Ring support will expand its potential sales.
