With the Pentium II due out next week and pressure from the likes of Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Intel Corp is indeed cutting prices for some of its older chips by between 30% and 40% – the very thing that gave investors the shivers a few weeks ago (CI No 3,141). But the price cuts are not as severe as some were anticipating, with high-end chips cut by as little as 2 or 3 percent. And investors believe that prices on the Pentium II will be cut soon after the launch on May 6, due to customer pressure. Meanwhile at the systems level, Dell Computer Corp cut its prices by up to 15% in the US on its OptiPlex line of corporate desktops using Pentium MMX chips.
