Rockwell International Corp says it will begin large volume production of its high-speed K56 modem chip sets as scheduled this month, and it expects the first modems using the chips to be in stores in March. Demand for early samples has been strong and it has shipped them to more than 130 customers. It expects 135 of its customers to deploy the K56 chip sets by the end of the year, and those customers account for more than 70% of the worldwide market for personal modems, and 60% of the worldwide market for modems used by Internet service providers.
