Remember the Tele-TV closure story? It seems to have been a little premature, but that was clearly because the source was either Bell Atlantic Corp or Nynex Corp, both of which, according to the Wall Street Journal, do want to close the company, which was formed to create entertainment content for the three Bells’ video on demand projects. However the Journal now hears that Pacific Telesis Group Inc wants to keep the thing going because it wants to launch cellular television services in Los Angeles this spring, and is insisting that the partners continue to finance Tele-TV, at least through its introduction. The West Coast Bell needs Tele-TV to supply the digital television set-top converter boxes and billing systems for its cellular service. But Bell Atlantic and Nynex have shelved their own plans for cellular television on the East Coast and do not want to pay for another firm’s service on the West Coast.
