Netscape Communications Corp has inked a major distribution deal with push technology poster-company Marimba Inc that will see Netscape distributing Marimba’s Castanet products. Netscape will resell the Castanet Transmitter software that runs on the server to enable organizations to control, manage and deploy information over the internet and corporate intranets. Netscape said it had evaluated other tools – without naming names – but Marimba was the only product appropriate and available. It’s actually an extension to the pair’s existing year-old agreement that involved the inclusion of Castanet tuner client technology into the Netscape Netcaster push element of its Communicator browser-cum-groupware. The Mountain View company also said that apart from the obvious product revenues, the deal would provide a boost to the service side of its business, which already counts for one quarter of Netscape’s revenues. Castanet Transmitter pricing starts at $1000.
