San Rafael, California productivity software developer International Microcomputer Software Inc has acquired the technology and assets of Maplinx Corp from Bohemia, New York- based Computer Concepts Corp. Maplinx is the developer of the Windows-based data-mapping program, also called Maplinx, which IMSI says will give it a valuable entry point into the mapping software arena. The geographic information systems technology will also be integrated into IMSI’s TurboCAD computer-aided design product line. IMSI will employ key Maplinx executives, including its president, but has not mentioned what will happen to the company’s other staff, although it will continue Maplinx development at the company’s site in Dallas, Texas. Computer Concepts only acquired Maplinx in January 1995 for $1.5m (CI No 2,585), but of late it has been showing far more interest in its other subsidiary, Softworks Inc, which is building up a Year 2000 consultancy business. A third subsidiary, handling the once popular SuperBase Windows database, was quietly sold off last year to a Cambridge-UK based consortium of developers now called Superbase Developers Plc. Computer Concepts, which also market the d.b.Express data visualization and data mining tool, reported a net loss of $16.1m for the year ending December 31 1996, on revenue which reached $19m.
