McAfee said that it will be expanding the existing application protection in its Firewall Enterprise appliance product line, which provides security administrators visibility, recognition and policy enforcement of over thousands of applications.

The company said, with the new enhancements McAfee’s Firewall Enterprise offering will be able to identify and control a range of web applications. In addition, application intelligence from McAfee Labs will provide administrators an understanding of the risk associated with those applications.

According to McAfee, its Firewall Enterprise offering, which is combined with application identification and planned for Spring 2010 availability, offers user awareness capabilities that will provide network protection that can be mapped to corporate security policies.

Dan Ryan, executive vice president and general manager of the Network Security business unit at McAfee, said: “Adding these new capabilities, backed by the researchers at McAfee Avert, sets us apart from the competition. McAfee Firewall Enterprise already provides comprehensive application threat and malware blocking, as well as industry-leading URL filtering and TrustedSource reputation-based blocking capabilities.
