Cyrix Corp, Richardson Texas, reported first-quarter results that blew away Wall Street estimates, as the chipmaker returned to profitability after losing money for three straight quarters. Net income was $6.6m on revenue up 47% at $75.6m, compared to net income of $2m for the first quarter of 1996. Earnings per share soared to $0.33 – up from $0.10 last time – far surpassing the First Call consensus of $0.09. The company says strong sales of MediaGX and 6×86 processors were largely responsible for the solid results.
